There is an Arabic saying, "اضحك، تضحك لك الدنيا" meaning, "Smile, and the world will smile back at you."
Yet life does not always return that smile, no matter how much positivity one brings into it.
Nour Arkilo created this illustration during the 2024 war in Lebanon, a period marked by uncertainty, fear, and profound hardship. Despite the darkness that surrounded everyday life, the work reflects a collective resilience and determination to keep moving forward, to hold on to hope, and to continue smiling even when the world offered every reason not to.
