Behind the Artwork

The piece was born in a bar in Paris, listening to a Lebanese band play. Pauline found herself drawing without quite deciding to, carried along by a wave of nostalgia. It was the oud that did it, she says, an instrument that holds a particular place in Lebanese culture, its sound closer to a voice calling you home than an instrument playing a note. For her, the oud has never just been an instrument. It carries memory, longing, belonging. The title plays on language too: in Arabic, oud names the instrument, but it also carries the idea of returning. The drawing, she says, is her attempt to capture how music can summon a desire to reconnect with home, even from very far away.

About the artist

Pauline Njeim

Pauline Njeim is a graphic designer and visual communicator by day, and an illustrator and artist by night. Passionate about drawing, she enjoys experimenting with lines, dots, and colours, transforming simple marks into meaningful visual expressions. For Pauline, art is a space of endless possibilities, where there are no wrong lines, colours, or strokes, only opportunities for discovery and creation.

Art is the most important part of her life. It is what nourishes her soul, brings her back to herself, and allows her to connect deeply with her emotions. Through her creative practice, Pauline explores both playfulness and introspection, using visual language as a way to express, reflect, and connect.
