Behind the Artwork

A tree that appears to grow the wrong way, rooted not in soil but in water, the only spot of color in an otherwise black-and-white piece. “It's a message of hope,” Nay says, “that even fragmented pieces, even anonymous, lifeless things, can come alive again.” It's the piece she says she'd give away before any other. “The delusional ideas we have can actually make a difference, believing in something outside the rules we think we're bound by.”

About the artist

Nay Azar

Nay Azar was born in Lebanon and now lives and works in Vancouver. She has drawn since childhood and took her first class as a teenager. A screenwriter and tango dancer as well as a painter, she begins with an idea or a feeling and looks for the form that can carry it. In her paintings that form is often a symbol and her work returns to roots, containment, transformation, and the moment something is about to change. Each piece is an attempt to make an invisible inner state something you can stand in front of and recognize.
